After being inaugurated into the office of the president in 2015, Buhari said his wife will not be addressed as the first lady but as the “wife of the president.” However, at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa yesterday, June 13th, while presenting awards to both the current and ex-wives of governors of the 36 states, Aisha Buhari stated that she can now be addressed as the first lady.

Why the sudden departure from her husband’s previous announcement? Aisha Buhari said her ‘wife of the president’ title was causing confusion amongst the governors’ wives who didn’t know whether to be addressed as wives of the governors or first ladies.

“When my husband was elected newly,” she said.

“I personally chose to be called the wife of the president. But, I realized that it causes confusion from the state as to whether the wives of state governors are to be addressed as the first ladies or wives of the governors. So, forgive me for confusing you from the beginning, but now I choose to be called the first lady.”

Mrs Buhari added that the new title will take effect immediately.
