US singer and actor, Jussie Smollett who stars as Jamal Lyon in the hit show Empire was recently targeted in what has been termed a ‘homophobic attack.’ The star openly declared his preference to the disappointment of some ladies who longed for a piece of the cuteness.
He was recently attacked and allegedly had a noose hung round his neck. His attackers have not been apprehended.
Not to speak for the other team but being openly gay in the US is not a crime like in certain countries where it attracts a jail term. In fact gay marriages are legal in some certain states, even some stars like Ellen DeGeneres have same sex spouses.
So why was he targeted now? Does it have anything to do with his recent comment that some may perceive as trying to belittle President Trump?
He recently said that the only ‘Donald’ he knows is Glover and that perhaps sparked an outrage that mitigated the attack.
The president has been accused of being racist and used derogatory words for black people.
From the timing of the attack it is apparent that it has little to do with being gay after all he has openly come out for years so why attack him now?
Not to jump the gun but the colour of his skin and his political affiliation might be part of the reason for this.
This is a clear indication that the end of racism is nothing short of a mirage. The recent reaction to sexual scandals have shown that some are treated differently.
The recent reactions in Hollywood towards R Kelly’s sexual assault is an indication that the colour of the skin will continue to play a major role in decisions in the industry for a very long time.
Stars have pulled their collaborations with the embattled star from streaming sites and even apologized for their associations with him (although they didn’t return the earnings)
Yet Weinstein is yet to have one production he made to be pulled from being viewed or have people apologise for making them.
How about that?
