With millions of people waiting for the finale of Game of Thrones like the coming of Christ, one is forced to wonder what makes this series so special. It’s not like there hasn’t been other hit TV series like Breaking Bad, Grey’s Anatomy, Friends and so on. But the whole buzz and hype surrounding GoT made it unique and extraordinary.
Some great movies grow stale and incite less excitement after two or three seasons but not Game of Thrones. Even in its 8th season, it still garners extremely high anticipation.
So what is it with Game of Thrones? Why is it often mentioned when people discuss great TV shows? Is it really the greatest TV show of all time as many people claim?
You definitely can’t deny it has a lot of outstanding qualities. Some of which include:
Sequences we won’t be forgetting in a hurry: Ned Stark’s death; the red wedding where Catelyn Stark and her son Rob Stark were unexpectedly murdered; Viserys getting a fiery crown of gold; Cersei blowing up the sept with wildfire; the chilling moment when Daenerys pulled the rug from under the slave masters and walked away with 8000 unsullied. And the list goes on and on…These captivating scenes are one of the reasons why fans have had to watch GoT over and over again while waiting for the grand finale.
The characters and plotlines are complex, yet engaging. Multiple threads and super complex characters combine to make this show a blast. It’s hard to write off a character as totally bad or good in GoT, take Cersei for instance. To the Starks and all of the seven kingdoms in Westeros, she is pure evil. She’s definitely acted in ways that have earned her that ill reputation and yet it’s hard for fans to despise her. Why? She does have some redeeming traits and you can say the same thing about the Hound.
We also see good characters with good intentions making wrong decisions that land them and their loved ones in bad places. It can be somewhat hard to take sides in GoT and that contributes to making the show unique.
It is often difficult to follow the smart language and wry humor of this show. Your brain is forced to do some serious mental work and when understanding comes, you feel instantly rewarded. This activity is more than welcome among intellectuals and nerdy geeks.
Strong Sensory Appeal
The clashing of swords, sputtering of internal organs and mad orgies in Game of Thrones all invoke a strong feeling in us as they appeal to almost all our senses. While our intellectual sides stay glued to the talkier parts of the show, the raw visuals leave us at the edges of our seats. We can’t seem to get enough.
Who’d have thought a nobleman like Ned Stark would be killed off so soon and in such a brutal manner? That’s to show you can’t pin game of thrones down. Get attached to a character at your own risk. You guess and they prove you wrong at almost every turn: weddings become bloodbaths, princes like Theon Greyjoy become slaves, psychopaths claim to power, and guys that are evil to the core gradually develop a conscience. All these unexpected twists spike our dopamine levels and keep us coming back for more.
However, this TV show is not as flawless as it appears to be. As fans, we don’t like admitting it but GoT like other TV shows, does have some questionable factors.
How Conventional Or Cool Is Bumping Off Major Characters?
Though we don’t know which major character will die next, we now look forward to their demise. Ned Stark’s death was one major reason the show earned an ‘unpredictable’ status but now with the way protagonists are dying anyhow, this wildly unpredictable show has become almost predictable. Forcing one to ask just how cool or conventional this killing off of major and good characters is.
Are The Tits And Jiggling Bare Flesh In GoT All That Necessary?
There’s a lot of nudity—mostly female, in Game of Thrones and not all of them are plot-advancing. This high amount of nudity has actually birthed the term “sexposition—a combination of the terms “sex” and “exposition.” It refers to the relevance of sexual scenes in providing information to an audience about character motivations and backstories. It’s not exposition when the nude or sex scenes don’t reveal any relevant issue that helps viewers have a better understanding of the movie’s plot.
GoT could have definitely done without most of the nude scenes like the flashing of tits and lesbian sex in Baelish’s brothel.
Well, we still can’t wait to see how it all ends. Who will claim the iron throne?
