There’s been a recent increase in the rate of depression among Nigerians, especially among the youths and middle-aged adults. With news of Nigerians trying to jump into Lagos lagoon and some succeeding in committing suicide, depression has become a cause for serious concern. And wondering what could be the reason for the sudden spike in the rate of depression, a fan on Twitter asked Simi to share her thoughts on the issue last night.
According to the award-winning Nigerian singer, depression stems from the “struggle to keep up” and the “fear of failure.” And that she says is “scary and sad.” Read her full reply below
While Simi is definitely not wrong, do you think the fear of not succeeding in life is the sole reason for depression? There has been news of young Nigerian youths committing suicide because they feel different from their peers and don’t like it—identity issues, gender issues, the struggle to fit into the society and the fear of being alienated.
Whatever the reason may be though, like Simi said, let someone know how you feel and know that it is okay to unburden yourself.
