Woman with white teeth

If you want whiter teeth but also want to avoid the chemicals, this article lists many options that are both natural and safe.

Brush With Baking Soda

Baking soda has natural whitening properties, which is why it is a popular ingredient in commercial toothpaste. It is a mild abrasive that can help scrub away surface stains on teeth. Additionally, baking soda creates an alkaline environment in your mouth, which prevents bacteria from growing. This is not a remedy that will whiten your teeth overnight, but you should notice a difference in the appearance of your teeth over time. To use this remedy, mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda with 2 teaspoons of water and brush your teeth with the paste. You can do this a few times per week.

Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is a traditional teeth whitening remedy by Indians. This technique is also meant to improve your overall oral health and hygiene. To perform oil pulling, you have to squish oil around in your mouth. Any oil could be used for oil pulling, but sunflower oil and sesame oil are mostly used. Coconut oil is also a popular option as it tastes delightful and offers other health benefits as well. Oil pulling is useful because it helps remove many types of bacteria from the mouth. These bacteria cause plaque and make your teeth yellowish. To perform oil pulling with coconut oil, take one tablespoon of it and squish it around in your mouth. Continue this process for 15 to 20 minutes.

Eat Fruits And Vegetable

A diet high in fruits and vegetables may be good for both your body and your teeth. While they’re no substitute for brushing them, crunchy, raw fruits and vegetables can help rub plaque away as you chew. Strawberries and pineapple are two fruits that have been claimed to help whiten your teeth. An enzyme named “bromelain” found in pineapple effectively removes stains and is useful in overall tooth whitening. Strawberries, on the other hand, contain malic acid, which is known to remove discoloration on your teeth and make them appear whiter.

Rub Banana, Orange Or Lemon Peels

To perform this “trick,” take a banana, orange, or lemon peel and gently rub it on your teeth. Keep rubbing it for about 2 minutes, then thoroughly wash your mouth and brush your teeth. The peels of these fruits contain citric acid, which theoretically helps in teeth whitening. If you’re having sensitivity issues, chances are your teeth enamel is weak or has worn off. In that case, it’s not recommended to use this remedy.

Don’t Underestimate The Power Of Flossing And Brushing

While some tooth discoloration naturally comes with age, it’s largely a result of plaque buildup. Regularly brushing and flossing can help your teeth stay white by reducing bacteria in your mouth and preventing plaque buildup. Toothpaste gently rubs out stains on your teeth, and flossing removes bacteria that lead to plaque. Regular dental cleanings can also help your teeth stay clean and white.

Visit The Dentist

If none of those mentioned above remedies seem to work for you and your teeth are continuously becoming more and more yellowish, it might be time to let a professional handle this, a dentist in this case, of course. Veneers or dental implants might be your choice instead of teeth with poor color and health. Veneers are fragile wafers of porcelain which are permanently mounted onto your teeth. Veneers mask your teeth and display an artificial color, shape, or positioning. Veneers are not actually a “teeth whitening” solution, but they can make your smile look brighter by masking an artificial layer on your teeth. If your teeth’s health and color don’t seem to be repairable, dental implants could be the way to go. Dental implants are metal posts that are meant to hold artificial teeth replacements on them.
