For some time now, Nigerians have decided that the topic of discussion is internet fraud, we do not like to call it yahoo yahoo as it makes the case so trivial when it isn’t. Nigerian musician Simi took her social media page to talk about this societal menace and a lot of people were attacking her. Some alleged fraudsters threatened to stop buying and playing her music.
The fact that we have come to this point where an issue as horrible as internet fraud is applauded means we have lost sight of morality and humanity. Many Nigerians have the government to blame for it, but there are simple things that we do that show that we are not ready for growth in Nigeria. It’s now obvious that corruption and crime amidst the youths.
It’s obvious we do not know how bad this fraudster image the so-called Yahoo people have given the country is. Nigerians require a visa to travel to almost every country in the world including African countries. As if that is not enough, once they see your passport at the airport, you are searched like a thief. A lot of Nigerians have lost a lot of opportunities as a result of this and the country has a very horrible image that will take time to revert.
A Nigerian musician even said that yahoo yahoo is a payback for the slave trade. Seriously? Duping people of their hard-earned money is payback? Have you ever been robbed? Have you ever lost all your money to a fraud scheme, like Ponzi? If you have, you would definitely know how painful it is to lose money to the fraudsters.
There are no jobs in Nigeria, that is crystal clear, but there are still a lot of people who work hard to make ends meet the right way. Stealing from people to make ends meets is not the right way by any means. We know our government is nothing to write home about. Hardworking Nigerians do not deserve to be denied opportunities they merit because of our image. Ghana has free visa entry to the United States and we are here justifying one of the ills of the society. Investors are leaving our country because of our dishonesty. They are moving to countries like Ghana, Rwanda, Kenya.
Dear Nigerians, we can definitely do better. Our government has failed us, but stealing is not the answer, duping people to buy Benz is not the answer. We can do better and we should do better. What do you think about this?
