Months after “Savage” rapper Meghan Thee Stallion came forward to accuse fellow rapper Tory Lanez of shooting her in the feet, he has been charged with assault.
25-year-old Megan came forward on July 15 to say that she had “suffered gunshot wounds, as a result of a crime that was committed against me and done with the intention to physically harm me.”
She had declined to name Lanez as the person who shot her in social media posts and videos on the subject for more than a month. But on 20 August she said in an Instagram video: “Yes … Tory shot me,” and she urged him to “stop lying” about the incident.
Lanez whose real name is Daystar Peterson is facing one count of assault with a semiautomatic firearm and one count of carrying a loaded, concealed firearm in a vehicle, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement.
The shooting occurred when both stars were riding in an SUV in Hollywood Hills on July 12. They got into an argument and he is accused of shooting at her feet several times when she exited the car and wounding her.Megan Thee Stallion, whose real name is Megan Jovon Ruth Pete, is identified as “Megan P” in the criminal complaint.
The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office announced on Thursday that Lanez has now been charged. He faces up to 22 years and eight months in prison if convicted, the district attorney said.
An arraignment for Lanez is scheduled on October 13. Prosecutors are recommending that his bail be set at $1.1m at his arraignment.
The 28-year-old was initially arrested on July 12 and charged with concealing a firearm in the vehicle, the police said at the time.
Lanez has not spoken publicly about the incident. On 24 September, he suggested on social media that he would break his silence that evening, but that announcement turned out to be a teaser for the release of his fifth studio album, Daystar.
On the album, he appeared to question Megan’s account of the incident.
“I would never put you in no danger,” Lanez rapped on the opening track, “and if I did, you would’ve said it when you seen the cops.”
The album was met with widespread criticism from listeners and debuted at No. 10 on the Billboard chart.
Representatives for Mr. Lanez did not immediately respond Thursday to a request for comment.
The shooting occurred at a defining moment in Megan’s career.
She had just earned her first number one single on Billboard Hot 100 with the remix to her “Savage” hit. For this, she had a Beyonce collaboration.
She made it to the top of the chart once again for her assistance on Cardi B’s “WAP.”
This month, during an appearance on this season’s “Saturday Night Live,” she called attention to the police shooting of Breonna Taylor.
“We need to protect our Black women and love our Black women, ‘cause at the end of the day, we need our Black women,” the rapper said.
Lanez had a Billboard top 20 hit with Luv in 2016 and has had a successful run of mixtapes and major-label records since his career began in 2009.
