Simi recently made a live Instagram video where she explicitly asked Yahoo boys to stop buying her songs.
“they are laughing at us. They are laughing at us. I am repeating it because I have seen it. Do you know how many Nigerians going to business meetings or just to get the smallest opportunity for themselves to make it and they leave with nothing because they are Nigerian, that’s the only excuse they get. Sorry, we can not work with Nigerians.
Common guys, you don’t have to like me, you don’t have to listen to my music, you don’t have to send me, but you see, I am not the enemy. I can easily sit down and pretend that nothing is wrong and just make money, smile, cheers blah blah, but the thing is, I care too much, if I didn’t give a sh*t, I wouldn’t say anything. I’ve had friends that have done Yahoo. I’ve had friends that have thought about it.
A host of mixed reactions have since trailed the celebrated singer’s statement. Offended fans have been calling her names and making angry comments like.
“abi thunder won strike you, na you dey talk rubbish about yahoo boy shey na ur papa won give us money abi Mumu shebi you self don become star abi no worry ??????? na your family go give us money ??????????”
Even the popular rapper, MI Abaga, have criticized Simi’s comments about Yahoo boys. He wrote on his Instagram page:
“In the spirit of uplifting our Queens.. @symplysimi I applaud your courage and your fortitude for speaking out on what you believe!!! The truth is that the scourge of internet fraud is hurting us more than it is helping us.. and please don’t misunderstand.. this country is so hard that I judge no man because I am imperfect.
“But we must not attack those that remind us of what we should be.. that energy is for us to vote.. us to speak out against our elected officials.. and for us to do a better job at lifting all young Nigerians so that they never have to turn away from righteousness to provide food to eat. We may be forced to eat with dirty hands.. but it doesn’t mean we should piss in clean water.”
While MI supports Simi’s stand against Yahoo boys, he’s not completely okay with people, including Simi, attacking Yahoo boys.
However, Simi’s statement in her live Instagram video is not standalone. Before making that statement, she had initially blasted Yahoo boys in her cover of Kizz Daniel’s viral Fvck You Challenge. This provoked a fan to ask that she leave Yahoo boys alone because most of them are the ones viewing her videos on Youtube and buying her song.
So Simi retorted, saying Yahoo boys can stop buying her CDs because nothing, not even that will hold her back from condemning Yahoo boys. Honestly, was she too harsh?
