The Guinness World Record houses a league of extraordinary people. Their talents range from super strength, hyper intelligence, or extraordinary skills. The good news is that anyone could be a record holder; the bad news is that the road to holding a record can be long and torturous. According to the GWR website, “Before applying for an existing record, check the current information and make sure you’ve got what it takes to break the record. If you are suggesting a new record idea, we recommend that you spend some time searching our current records to see what may already have been achieved in your area of expertise. Every newly approved record idea has to be significantly different from existing records and demonstrate a completely new skill. Being the first to suggest a record does not immediately qualify for acceptance, with around 60% of applications for new records being rejected. However, we are always looking for new exciting ideas to reflect the world’s diversity.”
With that understanding out of the way, here are the procedures to follow to set or break a world record.
1. Explore The World Record Database
Go to the Guinness World Record website and go through their database thoroughly. Read the rules for application; the rules for breaking a record. Reading the rules will enable you avoiding any errors. Like the website says, applications for new records are often rejected.
2. Choose A World Record Of Interest
Again, go to the website to see existing world records and make your pick. You can break multiple reords, if you can. If you cannot find a record that interests you, need not worry, you can suggest a world record to the board, and if they accept it, you would go on to pioneer a world record.
3. Apply And Wait For Guidelines
If your suggestion is not accepted, the board will reply and explain why. Patience is key when applying for a world record. The process could take 3 months or more. There is a priority service which requires you to pay a certain fee if you do not have the patience to wait.
4. Understand The Requirements And Evidence Needed
You’ll be sent a guide of guidelines. It’s crucial that you read through these guidelines carefully and understand what you need to do to get verified. More often than not, people get rejected for not adhering to the guidelines than the record itself.
5. Practice And Attempt The World Record
Practice, practice, practice. Because of the procedure of the process, it’s crucial that you are ready before attempting the world record. When you are ready, decide on a date, time and location for the record attempt, making sure you have the logistics planned out and the necessary equipment available.
Arrange the presence of the independent witnesses and any other specialists required. You must also make sure a photographer and videographer are there to document your attempt. Be sure to check the current record you need to beat in case it’s been broken, then attempt the record.
6. Submit Your Evidence
When you have successfully completed and broken the record, sent the evidence, cover letter, and all other required documents. More than 50% of submissions are rejected because the evidence is insufficient. Once you are confident with the submission, upload your evidence online and await the result.
7. The Result
Your result will let you know if you have been successful. Otherwise, you can re-apply.
