Ever since Simi bashed Yahoo boys in her fuck you challenge cover, it appears that the issue of internet fraud aka yahoo-yahoo stuck to the media. While many Nigerians including celebrities hopped on Simi’s ship to support her, many others condemned her statement. The upcoming Nigerian musician, Azeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley was among those who criticized Simi, “if you know about slavery, you go know say yahoo no be crime,” he said.
And he didn’t stop there, Naira Marley went on to release a song titled Am I a Yahoo Boy where he portrayed himself as a yahoo boy who ended up in police custody in the music video of the song and not long after, he was arrested for the same crime in real life. What led to his arrest? Well, according to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFFC), Naira Marley was found in possession of foreigners’ credit cards. Obviously, the Issa Goal crooner drew attention to himself with his open defense of yahoo-yahoo.
His arrest, however, has created friction in the celebrity world with some of your favorite stars condemning EFFC’s action and some hailing it. Here are some celebrities’ reactions to Naira Marley’s arrest:
Burna boy who was slated to perform alongside Naira Marley and Zlatan refused to believe that the singer has been arrested, here’s what he uploaded on Instagram.
He went on to beg for the release of Naira Marley and others who were arrested on his Snapchat “You see am now, no Zanku for my show today. My day is ruined. EFCC na beg I de beg please free them guys,” he wrote.
Davido also took to his Instagram feed to show solidarity for Naira Marley.
In case you are wondering what Marlian means—Naira Marley’s fans identify themselves as ‘Marlians.’
Daddy Showkey, at first refused to address Naira Marley’s palaver because he felt the guy was a small boy who had no respect for his elder ones. However, Daddy Showkey recently uploaded a video on Instagram where he dragged the government for putting so much energy on Naira Marley’s case while ignoring corrupt politicians.
“Many things I saw yesterday made me laugh. What did Naira Marley do to warrant all the security? All the people wey be threats to our society, they never do them like this oh.”
“Eye wey cry 😭dey see road O na weytin this boy do self wey we never see before, na him kill people will Bomb 💣na him thief nigeria money yeye dey Smell”
The controversial On-air personality, Daddy Freeze goes after Christians as usual. He is not having it with Christians who are ‘badmouthing’ Naira Marley while keeping mute about their fraudulent pastors.
“Christians who are afraid to judge their false pastors have no right to judge Marley. God’s judgment will begin in his house. The ‘house’ of God (I say this metaphorically because God does not live in temples built by human hands Acts7:48, Acts 17:24), is in total disarray until we are ready to fix this, we remain hypocrites worse than the Pharisees.”
Ruggedman was one of the first celebrities to applaud EFCC for arresting Naira Marley. Speaking in pidgin English, Ruggedman expressed his happiness about Naira Marley’s arrest
“I wake up this morning to see say EFCC don carry am. I don dey wait to see his people wey go halla go EFCC office go protest, but I no see dem.
“Well, make we dey wait, because at the end of the day, my advice to the people on social media, all you gangsters and gangsteresses, know that when dem dey push you for social media, real-life dey. If dem push you mistakenly …you know say when rewire dey work, and dem cross two wires, e go shock. So wetin happen to am today be say dem go cross social media wire, the fake life wire with reality own, e com shock am. As reality com put hand inside socia media pull am comot say guy com and explain that your slavery issue first”.
Teebilz was among those who slammed Ruggedman over his comments about Naira Marley. In a caption he posted along with Naira Marley’s picture on Instagram, he prayed for Naira Marley and bashed Ruggedman:
“May the grace of God be sufficient for the needs of this talented young man during his trials…we all make mistakes and my personal take is that most of this young guys don’t know better and I feel it’s our obligation as the older ones to put them right instead of just calling them out on social media for unnecessary validation! OG Rugged Man, I hope you can do that shit privately next time sir! I know you don’t want that smoke with me, bro, if you take my message the other way bros!”
At the end of the day, with Naira Marley currently awaiting a bail hearing on May 30th in Ikoyi prison, Timaya’s instructive words about the whole fiasco is worth taking home.
“…Have you noticed that everyone that has actually sang about death died in real life?” He said in an Instagram video. “Starting from Biggie, Tu Pac, XXX and Dagrin? …about Naira Marley, in that Am I a Yahoo Boy video, he was arrested and the next thing in real life he got arrested. What am I saying? I think the tongue has powers, you should watch what you say, the kind of words you use, what you act and whatever because this life is spiritual”
