The journey that began with Ned Stark eight years ago came to it’s ‘Snowy’ end last Sunday, which was the 19th of May. The quest to find out who ends up sitting on the bloody iron throne that’s led to the gruesome death of many powerful men in Game of Thrones had fans (both satisfied and unsatisfied) anticipating the Game of Thrones Finale.
Everyone wanted to know who among Cersei Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow will die fighting for the iron throne and who will emerge the winner. And surprise surprise, unlike the fight for political office in the real world, none of the candidates with the highest number of votes was ruled in. The everlasting throne built from a thousand swords that people killed and died for went extinct in a single blast of fire from Drogon’s mouth and Bran the broken (never a prospective candidate and never campaigned) was crowned ruler of the six kingdoms—iron throne or not.
And that was it! The show wrapped up in the unpredictable fashion it was known and heralded for. But many fans, as has been the order of the day since the premiere of GOT’s final season, are calling out GOT writers for ending the movie in a ‘weak and disappointing’ way. And celebrities including the stars of GOT also have something to say about the ending.
Check out the mixed reactions of celebrities to Game of Thrones finale and know who is on your side—it’s all fun, relax.
Isaac Hempstead who starred as Bran Stark actually laughed when he got the final script for GOT because he thought it was a joke. In a conversation with EW, he said “When I got to the [Dragonpit scene] in the last episode and they’re like, ‘What about Bran?’ I had to get up and pace around the room,” Hempstead Wright told Entertainment Weekly. “I genuinely thought it was a joke script and that [showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss] sent to everyone a script with their own character ends up on the Iron Throne. ‘Yeah, good one guys. Oh s—, it’s actually real?’
Bran shrugged and wore the crown.
That was his tweet at the end of the episode—kind of denotes indifference.
The mother of dragons triumphed over Cersei and her ironclad soldiers but her victory was shortlived as her own love, Jon Snow, stabbed her to death. About the ending, Emilia Clarke told EW.
“it comes out of f—king nowhere. I’m flabbergasted. Absolutely never saw that coming… It was a f—king struggle reading the scripts. What I was taught at drama school … I was told that your character is right. Your character makes a choice and you need to be right with that. An actor should never be afraid to look ugly. We have uglier sides to ourselves.”
And Janelle Monae is one celebrity who strongly believes justice was served right to everyone including Daenerys Targaryen.
“Sansa Stark cause she ain’t a little bird no more. She’s comin’ 4 that crown & Snow doesn’t want it & he is in love with a Dragon goddess turned straight up psychopath & Daenerys was dead as soon as Arya witnessed the mother & daughter get burned alive. Yep. Bye bye, Dragon Lady”
Jason who played Khal Drogo in GOT is not sharing any of that ‘crucifixion’ sentiment with Janelle Monae. Khal Drogo was Daenerys’ first love and husband in GOT and if he had lived till season 8, the episode finale would’ve probably ended with Daenerys becoming and remaining the queen of the seven kingdoms. The love between Jon Snow and Daenerys probably wouldn’t have occurred and Jon Snow wouldn’t have gotten intimately close enough to stab Daenerys. But it is what it is—Jon Snow ended her watch. And Jason wants to skin him alive for that.
Jason live-streamed himself watching the final episode of GOT on Instagram and his disappointed/angry reactions to some of the scenes are quite hilarious. He first apologized for not being there for her, then went on to show his support for her when she went all psycho dragon queen on King’s Landing. And when Jon Snow got to live after killing Daenerys, he lamented
“I feel lost. I’m lost. What the fuck! Drogon should’ve fucking melted his ass. Ugh! And the goddamn bar is closed!”
The master of bleak endings who has authored a lot of fantasy books that ended in a gothic way from Pet Sematary to Carrie doesn’t understand why people are making a fuss about the ending of GOT. According to Stephen King, the hit HBO show couldn’t have ended any better.
“I’ve loved this last season of GOT” he tweeted “including Dani going bugshit all over King’s Landing. There’s been a lot of negativity about the windup , but I think it’s just because people don’t want ANY ending. But you know what they say: All good things…”
And Stephen King isn’t the only one with that opinion. Pedro Pascal who starred as Oberyn Martel has just a few words to spare for GOT critics.
“Shut up, it was perfect”
Was it? Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth) like many of her co-stars never saw that series finale twist coming. Her expression sums it up
Speaking with E-news about the final season, she dished out a candid word of caution “you’re going to need therapy.”
