Big brother Naija has got to be the show with the highest number of mixed reactions. The show just isn’t an ‘everyone’s’ show. On one side are those who dislike the show as they feel Big Brother Naija is a waste of time and resources and on another side are those who can’t wait to start watching Big Brother Naija 2019. While some people feel it’s stupid to spend hours watching a group of strangers locked up in a camera-filled room, some other people become so obsessed with the lives of these strangers that they argue heatedly to defend some of their actions.
And even when you don’t watch the show, you can’t avoid hearing titbits about the housemates, thanks to social media and other media outlets. Soon enough, another wave of once-unknown names of new housemates contesting in the reality show will rise—names of shortlisted housemates for the big brother naija 2019 has already been released. In a matter of weeks, the show will start airing, here are what you can expect to see.
No doubt, there will be yet another housemate that will be dragged in the media for faking their accents. Gifty of Big Brother Naija 2017 was accused by Efe as well as other fans of the reality show of faking her accent. She denied the claims but later agreed in an interview with Linda Ikeji’s blog that she was indeed, faking her accent. Gifty probably felt looking and acting foreign will endear her to Nigerians but alas, it got her evicted faster than she could say ‘Thin Tall Tony.’ Uriel was also dragged in the mud for faking her accent.
Despite all of that, Big Brother Naija 2018 still came with its own share of accent controversies. Princess and Bam Bam got the heat for this and they didn’t last in the show too. Unlike Gifty, however, Princess denied that her accent was fake after she got evicted. Let’s see who fill the gap for the accent fakers this year; there will definitely be one or two.
Crazy beings are never scarce in this reality show. Housemates are always onto one crazy act or the other, whether they are naturally crazy or faking it for the viewer remains a question. Can’t blame them though; to get popular, you have to act in ways that will plant your name in people’s tongues. Take CeeC for instance, she’s the embodiment of savagery: when she’s not blasting one housemate or the other, she is giving everyone in the house a ‘silent treatment.’
Most of what people said about Ceec was negative and yet she came out on top as the 1st runner up of Big Brother Naija 2018. Who’s to say the next housemates have not already rehearsed ceec’s actions, geared up to give the audience a full dose of craziness?
Being Too Real
And then there are those who’d feel they have to speak more of pidgin like Efe so that the audience will love their ‘realness.’ Part of the reason Efe won Big Brother Naija 2017 was that people felt he was being real: he stuck to speaking pidgin most of the time and called out housemates that were acting ‘unafrican’ like Gifty. Efe’s actions from when he was first welcomed to the Big Brother Naija stage: taking off his shirt in excitement, made people see him as relatable. Also, knowing he came from a humble background, also got too many viewers of the reality show.
It won’t be surprising to see Efe’s lookalikes in big brother naija 2019.
Romance/Love For The Screen
Fans expected that Efe and Marvis relationship will extend beyond Big Brother Naija screen but it didn’t work out that way. Same with Tobi and Alex, they hung out together for weeks after the show to the pleasure of many fans but from all indications now, they are not dating each other.
Marvis and Efe were almost inseparable in the house, the special connection they seemed to share made a lot of fans warm up to them. But after the show, the couple went their separate ways. And interesting enough, both Efe & Marvis and Tobi & Alex made it to the final stage. Obviously, votes from fans of romance kept trickling in and Big Brother Naija probably didn’t want to break any hearts by evicting one of the lovers. So expect more romance-for-screen-only from the upcoming housemates, they won’t disappoint.
Alex’s dancing moves endeared her to a lot of viewers. Dufil Prima Foods Plc even awarded her with a monetary prize of N1million for being the ‘Most Fun Housemate.’ She throws caution to the winds on the dance floor every Saturday night in the house, dancing as if her life depended on it. There is always something to talk about Alex’s dance moves every Saturday. The last dance in the house, where she and Tobi danced shaku shaku together, made news headlines as it trended a lot on Twitter.
Alex emerged 3rd runner up and went home with 1 million Naira for her fun and upbeat personality. No doubt, twerking and other dance moves are on the to-do list of this year’s housemates.
Miracle, winner of Big Brother Naija 2018, and Nina kissing in the bathroom half naked.
Tboss, 2nd runner up of Big Brother Naija 2017, taking off her cloth and baring her body parts in front of the housemates and the rest of the world.
Not everyone can go nude when there’s a camera on them, so going nude is one way to get people talking—popularity. Big Brother Naija 2019 housemates have taken note.
