As a fan of Game of Thrones, you probably wished at one time or the other that some of the love-struck characters on the series are romantically linked in real life. All that chemistry between Jaimie and Cersei, Jon Snow and Daenerys, Grey Worm and Missandei or Arya and Gendry, you want it to stick and be the deal off-screen. It will be two familiar faces ‘coupling up’ and making it feel like the story is not all fiction or make-believe—how sweet!
Anyway, we can only hope, reality is usually distinct from fiction. While we brace ourselves to bid a sad goodbye to GOT on May 19, let’s bask once again in the personal life of characters from the show that we have grown to love. Let’s check out the individuals who have the privilege of welcoming them home at the end of every screening.
Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) and Joe Jonas
It was a private Vegas wedding for Sophie Turner and her actor/singer boyfriend Joe Jonas. The 21 year old actress who launched her acting career at the age of 15 by appearing on GOT dated her bf for less than a year before accepting his marriage proposal on October 2017.
Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth) And Giles Deacon
Christie portrayed a character who men don’t find attractive. She can score high points on the battlefield but on the field of love, it doesn’t go well for her. Renly Baratheon, her first love in the movie happens to be gay while Jaimie Lannister who she later grew to love has an unbreakable romantic bond with his twin sister, Cersei.
In Christie’s case, we say thank God it’s all fiction. She’s been in a long-term relationship with fashion designer, Giles Deacon since 2013.
Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) And Erica Schmidt
The master of GOT quotes! The most respected dwarf in Westeros whose girlfriend in the movie, Shae, betrayed in the worst possible way: bore false witness against him in a life/death situation and went on to have a romantic affair with his father, Tywin Lannister. Can a smart and intelligent man whose only disadvantage is height find true love? Of course, yes.
Peter Dinklage is happily married to actress and theater director, Erica Schmidt. They have been married for over a decade and are blessed with two kids.
Jason Momoa (Khal Drogo) And Lisa Bonet
At first, Khal Drogo appeared to viewers as this beastly savage from Dothraki who’s come to claim our beloved Daenerys Targaryen. And then we started seeing how fiercely protective he is of Daenerys. “The moon of my life,” he calls her and Daenerys replies with “my sun and star”—how heart-melting. But no, all that romance ended on set.
In real life, Jason Momoa who played Khal Drogo is married to American actress, Lisa Bonet. The pair dated for 12 years before walking down the aisle on October 2017. They have two kids: a girl name Lola Lolani Momoa and a boy named Nakao-Wolf Momoa.
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaimie Lannister) and Nukaaka Coster-Waldau
It is neither Cersei (Lena Headey) nor Brienne (Gwendoline Christie) for Nikolaj Coster who acted as Jaimie Lannister in Game of Thrones. Nikolaj Coster has been in a lasting marriage of over 20 years with Nukaaka, a former Miss Greenland and a singer. They have two beautiful teenage daughters.
Jacob Anderson (Grey Worm) And Aisling Loftus
Grey Worm and Missandei’s relationship has always baffled GOT’s audience. Like in this our world, the size of a man’s manhood matters a lot to many women. But here’s Missandei falling in love and declaring her love to the commander of the unsullied (the unsullied were castrated by their slave masters). That’s the kind of love we all dream of, an unconditional love.
We do hope that Jacob Anderson (Grey Worm) and his partner in real life, Aisling Loftus shares that kind of love. The couple got married in December 2018 after 5 years together.
Kristofer Hivju (Tormund Giantsbane) and Gry Molvaer Hivju
Tormund Giantsbane was the first man in GOT to be genuinely attracted to Brienne of Tarth. Together, they make a formidable pair and Giantsbane once fantasized out loud of how they will bear strong, healthy children. Alas, Brienne was pining for Jaimie when Giantsbane trodded into her life and their love never became a thing.
Well, the red-headed actor, Kristofer Hivju who plays Giantsbane tied the knot with Gry Molvaer, his red-headed journalist girlfriend in 2015. Their union is blessed with two girls.
Carice Van Houten (Melisandre) And Guy Pearce
The only constant man in the life of the mysterious Melisandre was the Lord of Light. All other men she had sex with in GOT was as the Lord led. Besides the fact that she commands fear, no man in his right senses would be attracted to her if they saw her without the powerful necklace she wears. When she takes off the necklace, beautiful Melisandre transforms into a frail and ugly old woman.
It’s good to know that Carice Van Houten (Melisandre) is as flawlessly beautiful as Melisandre is when the powerful necklace is around her neck. The stunning actress is married to Guy Pearce, who she met on the set of Brimstone, a film they both starred in. They have a son.
Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) And Ollie Jackson
Gendry had his sweet marriage proposal to Arya turned down in GOT and it does appear that he won’t be having another go at it in real life. In Game of Thrones, Maisie Williams played a character (Arya) who wasn’t cut out for girly things like dressing up to please a prince or sewing. Swords were her favorite plaything and she preferred the battlefield to palaces. Now Gendry, thinking being crowned with a lordship title will make him more appealing to Arya got his heart politely broken as Arya says no to his invitation to be his one and only lady.
Well, Maisie Williams is unlike Arya. And in real life, she is sticking it out with her high school boyfriend, Ollie Jackson.
Kit Harrington (Jon Snow) And Rose Leslie (Ygritte)
How ironical that it was these two who wanted to kill each other on first sight in GOT that ended up in a marital bond. Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) who was head-over-heels for Jon didn’t score a romantic behind-the-scene life with him. Maybe instead of giving Jon those lovey-dovey stares, Daenerys should have constantly shoved him off with ‘you know nothing, Jon Snow.’
But it’s all good, even though Rose Leslie didn’t have long screen time on the show like Daenerys, she did star in the show. And because of her, we have two familiar faces from the show who ‘coupled up.’ The couple wedded on June 23, 2018, in Scotland.
